AKUNA was created to help NGOs access the resources they need while supporting the communities and economies in which they operate.
AKUNA forms part of the wider Kilimpombo initiative, established in memory of Michael Mpombo, founder of the Kili Centre for Orphans and Street Children in Moshi, Tanzania.
Michael believed deeply in the power of education to transform lives and create opportunity. Despite facing significant challenges in his own life, he pursued education, earned an MBA and dedicated himself to supporting vulnerable children and young people.
His belief that lasting change comes through opportunity, dignity and local leadership continues to shape our work today.
Our work is built on four core principles that influence how we support organisations, engage with communities and create lasting value.
Education creates opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom. We support organisations that help people access learning, develop skills and build greater independence for the future.
The most effective solutions are often developed by those closest to the challenges. We work alongside organisations that understand their communities and are committed to creating lasting positive change.
We believe supporters should be able to see how their contributions are used. By connecting donations with specific needs, support can be directed towards practical resources and clearly identified priorities.
Strong communities are built through participation, opportunity and shared responsibility. We support approaches that strengthen local organisations while encouraging sustainable local economic activity.
AKUNA currently supports organisations in East Africa, with plans to expand through trusted partnerships and responsible growth.
As the starting point for AKUNA, the region provides the relationships, experience and local knowledge that are helping shape the platform's development and future growth.
A team of six volunteers, bringing together different skills, experiences and perspectives to help turn the AKUNA vision into reality.
Providing essential items helps NGOs concentrate their funding on the bigger challenges they face, allowing programmes to run more effectively and resources to go further.

To empower NGOs and the communities they serve by improving access to essential resources, creating opportunities and supporting sustainable local development.
We work alongside NGOs delivering practical support and long-term opportunities across four key areas that contribute to stronger and more resilient communities.
Supporting access to learning, skills and opportunity. We believe education creates the foundation for independence, confidence and long-term positive change.
Helping organisations that support vulnerable children and young people. By providing resources and opportunities, these organisations can help children reach their full potential.
Strengthening local organisations and community-led initiatives. Strong communities are built through local leadership, participation and shared responsibility.
Supporting programmes that help people build brighter, more independent futures. Creating opportunities for growth and development can have a lasting impact on individuals, families and communities.
By 2030, we aim to achieve these ambitious yet achievable goals
